Contact Us Acupressure Acupressure has been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine for its effectiveness in the treatment of illness and pain. It can correct functional imbalances and restore the flow thus returning the body to a more natural state of well-being. Many doctors believe that acupressure has positive and healing effects on the body. Researchers try to provide explanations and practical applications of the techniques. The researches indicate that self-acupressure treatment helps with patient recovery and also it is cost effective. A systematic review published in American Society for Pain Management Nursing concludes that acupressure has been shown to be effective for relieving a variety of pains in different populations. The review begins to establish a credible evidence base for the use of acupressure in pain relief. The implication for health care providers would be incorporating acupressure into their practice as an alternative therapy to facilitate patients who suffer from pain. Acupressure applies the same principles as acupuncture. It is sometimes referred to as the needleless acupuncture because both forms of healing use the same points to achieve the desired results.

I also recommend it to those practitioners who follow the maxim, Physician Heal Thyself. Eight of the eleven patients reported that they were doing the exercises on a regular basis weeks after we ended their participation in the project.

Prior to using the Acupressure warmup routine, I was prone to injury. I have been warming up with this method for five years now and have been pain and injury free, and it only takes 10 minutes!

I have recommended this book to dozens of friends who have had similar success. My husband who travels a good deal, uses tennis balls on his back pressure points while driving or flying to relieve back pain.

Because my pain is chronic I find myself stiff and sore after work and in the morning when I wake up. After applying the techniques I can go throughout the day with much pain and muscle spasms. USA This book is a useful resource not only for helping me to manage my own aches and pains, but I also recommend and frequently lend this book to my patients.

As a physical therapist, I am always looking for ways to teach people to take control of their own pain and this book acts as a great adjunct to my own treatments. I currently work with chronic pain patients and several of them have borrowed my book and subsequently ordered their own copy as these techniques have given them excellent relief. Excess body weight is the sixth most important risk factor contributing to the overall burden of disease worldwide, such as hypertension, heart disease, hypercholesterolaemia, diabetes mellitus, cerebrovascular disease, gall bladder disease, and some types of cancer [ 2 , 3 ].

Obesity is becoming a global epidemic and common health problem. Currently, most of the Western anti-obesity drugs have adverse effects like oily discharge followed by flatus and faecal incontinence for orlistat [ 6 ]; headache, nausea and dizziness for lorcaserin [ 7 ] or body weight regaining upon cessation of therapy [ 8 ]. Systematic reviews and randomized controlled trials have shown the beneficial effects of acupuncture, including body acupuncture and auricular acupressure [ 9 , 10 ].

Acupuncture compared with placebo or lifestyle modification had more effectiveness in lowering body weight, BMI and waist circumference and it had a similar efficacy as the Western anti-obesity drugs with fewer reported adverse effects of insomnia, headache or gastrointestinal reactions [ 10 , 11 ].

Auricular acupressure has been summarized as having the effect of appetite suppression on overweight patients [ 12 ], and its efficacy on weight control is higher when combined with body acupuncture [ 13 ]. However, these conclusions are limited due to the small sample size and low quality of the methodologies of these studies.

Therefore, we design this single-blinded, randomized controlled clinical trial to explore the effectiveness, efficacy and safety of body acupuncture and auricular acupressure on weight control in Hong Kong. Objective The aim of the study is to assess the efficacy and safety of body acupuncture and auricular acupressure compared to sham acupuncture on body weight control through a pilot randomized controlled study.
